this book owns a permanent place in my brain and i don’t see it leaving anytime soon.

i read this back in october and now listening to the audiobook just proved it wasn’t a fluke. it hits just as hard, maybe even harder, and somehow i’m noticing even more layers the second time around. this is easily one of my all-time favorites and it still feels unreal that this is a debut.

the story got under my skin early and never let go. it was unpredictable, and there’s something about the way it unfolds that keeps you locked in, like you’re bracing for what’s coming but you still aren’t ready when it hits. i kept thinking i understood where things were going and then immediately realizing i didn’t.

the writing is genuinely beautiful. there’s this lyrical quality to it that makes lines stay with you, scenes replay, and certain moments feel carved into you. i kept PAUSING just to sit with certain lines because they lingered.

mireille is everything to me. the strength it takes to endure what she goes through and still stand, still push forward, still claim herself… i was in awe of her the entire time. she’s not perfect, she breaks, she struggles, but she never loses that core of who she is. i wanted to reach through the pages and hold her hand, and at the same time watch her burn everything down when she’s ready.
