A sky-high vegetable lasagna with five layers of noodles, sauce, cheese, and vegetables (that are not an afterthought). The top layer — crackly with melted, deeply bronzed cheese over a thin slick of garlicky tomato sauce — is my favorite part. → Perfect Vegetable Lasagna on smittenkitchen.com or linked in profile. → Comment “send recipe” and I’ll DM it to you https://smittenkitchen.com/2020/02/perfect-vegetable-lasagna/
Whenever I go to Greece, I still see tons of protein bars at stores with “collagen” on the label as if it’s a huge plus for a muscle-building product. In reality, the evidence for collagen is much weaker than the marketing.
Collagen is a low-quality protein, with no tryptophan and very little leucine. In older women, whey boosted muscle protein synthesis in the hours after eating, with or without lifting. Collagen only gave a small bump after lifting. Over 6 days, whey kept muscle protein synthesis elevated, especially with lifting, while collagen didn’t raise it above baseline at all, even with lifting. In an earlier study in young lifters (PMID: 37202878) , collagen after squats was no better than a placebo for muscle protein synthesis, and didn’t even boost muscle connective tissue synthesis, the very thing it’s supposed to help with “But what about the effects on skin?” - Well, a new reanalysis of the main collagen-for-skin meta-analyses found data errors and incompatible measurements pooled together. Once corrected, there was no clear benefit and no dose-response and most of the positive trials were industry-funded. It’s not that collagen is harmful and better independent trials could change the picture. But for now you’re better off sticking to any other high quality protein source (eg: whey).
#SIF | 🇮🇩 BREAKING / TAUKAH KAMU?
