3 months agoThat is a legitimate national bestseller category, based on UK sales data from NielsenIQ BookScan. It does not mean it was the single bestselling book of any type in Britain. The Sunday Times maintains separate charts/categories (hardback fiction, paperback fiction, general paperbacks, etc.). For example, one week earlier, the official chart had Suicide of a Nation at No. 2 in General Paperbacks with 5,325 copies, behind Alex Partridge’s Why Does Everybody Hate Me? at 6,285. So the Instagram wording “Number One paperback in the country” is broadly defensible, provided “paperback” refers to that Sunday Times General Paperbacks category. Saying “Britain’s No. 1 bestselling book” without the category would be misleading. There is a separate controversy over the accuracy of the book itself. The Times reported criticism of alleged erroneous/misattributed quotations, questionable sources and statistics, and possible AI-related errors. Goodwin says he used AI for research/data analysis rather than to write the book and disputes the broader criticisms. So: the bestseller claim shown in your screenshot is essentially genuine; it isn’t evidence that the claims inside the book are necessarily correct.
