By Jason Miller Crime Reporter Julianne Bryan was on her way to work the morning of Aug. 24 when her phone rang. It was her cousin, and then more relatives, all with the same news: her son had been kidnapped at gunpoint in Jamaica. Almost two months later, Trevon Bryan, a 27-year-old from the Toronto area, is still missing. A senior officer with the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) told the Star Bryan’s abduction “appears very targeted” and isolated in nature. Senior Supt. Mark Harris, the commanding officer for the St. Andrew Central Police Division, said that the motive behind Bryan’s kidnapping remains unclear but “we just know that he was taken away without any trace.” Bryan was reported missing to the JCF on Aug. 24, by his aunt in Canada, who notified police that he had been abducted by an unknown gunmen. Harris said Bryan, a rapper known as “Yung Drilla,” was abducted by four masked men sometime between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m on Aug. 24. Jamaican police looking to speak with a ‘person of interest’ apparently present at abduction Bryan arrived in Jamaica on Aug. 18 from Canada and checked into an Airbnb in Montego Bay. “He went to Kingston (the capital) for the weekend accompanied by three persons including two females from Toronto,” Harris said. He said Bryan and the group went to a party at the Taboo nightclub then drove to an after party in August Town, a community located about 9 kilometres away from the club. Harris said the vehicle Bryan was travelling in had stopped along the roadway when they were approached by suspects. “Whilst on their way it is alleged that four armed men intercepted the vehicle they were travelling in and took Mr. Bryan from the vehicle.” “We believe that the person of interest caused the stop to happen, so that they could get him,” Harris told the Star. None of the other occupants of the vehicle were harmed or robbed, Harris said. Police took statements from two Toronto women who were in the car with Bryan that morning. They are looking to speak to a Canadian man they are calling a person of interest, who has since left the island for Canada. “We would like to speak to him because he was present at the ti
Peak detailing is peaking! The new Ramayana trailer has details that are easy to miss. Some go all the way back to ancient texts. 👀 Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Yash as Ravana and Sai Pallavi as Sita, looks set to tell a bigger story than the battle we already know. Take Ravana. The trailers hint at his rise to power, including his confrontation with Indra, king of the devas. In Ramayana traditions, Ravana’s conquests also involve his half-brother Kubera, the god of wealth, from whom he seizes Lanka and the Pushpaka Vimana. Imagine seeing the making of the villain before his eventual defeat. Then there’s Rama’s archery. In Valmiki’s Aranya Kanda, Sage Agastya gives Rama a divine bow associated with Vishnu, a sword and TWO quivers with an inexhaustible supply of arrows. So those endless arrows on screen could be a reference to scripture, rather than cinematic exaggeration. And remember the battle against 14,000 rakshasas led by Khara? It happens in Dandaka forest, long before the final war with Ravana. The music deserves a second listen too. The repeated “kshama” (forgiveness) in the trailer could be read as a contrast to the violence on screen. It’s a beautiful interpretation, although the filmmakers haven’t confirmed it. But the portrayal I’m most curious about is Sita. New footage shows her fighting back, a change from how she’s often depicted. Different Ramayana traditions portray her power differently. In the Adbhuta Ramayana, Sita takes a fierce form and defeats a thousand-headed Ravana. That doesn’t establish formal combat training in Valmiki’s text, but it shows how many layers her character has. With music by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer, there are more details to decode before the November 5 release. What hidden reference did YOU spot?
