Not hyperbole. Multiple studies in mice, monkeys and HUMANS show that processed foods damage a region of your brain that controls satiety. Mice (PMID 22201683) An evolutionarily inappropriate processed food diet causes microglial infiltration and astrogliosis of the arcuate nucleus. This inflammatory process prevents POMC (pro-opiomelanocortin) neurons from “sensing” circulating leptin, leading to a deficit in the satiety response. Macaque monkeys (PMID 38892139): Equivalent findings to the mouse model. Processed food diets caused arcuate nucleus astrogliosis and deficits in leptin signaling. Humans (PMID 22201683): Obese humans show damage (astrogliosis) in the infundibular nucleus (homologous to the arcuate nucleus) on T2-weighted MRI. This directly leads to disordered hunger and satiety cues. This is what “food noise” looks like at an anatomical level and you are doing it to yourself with the junk food you are eating. Those 200 calories of Oreos, Doritos, or any other garbage processed food are damaging the satiety center of your brain (the infundibular nucleus of the hypothalamus) and making you hungrier later. Over time, excess food intake due to disordered satiety leads to metabolic dysfunction, obesity and lower quality of life. Interestingly, GLP-1s partially bypass this “brain damage” and help restore satiety at the level of the hypothalamus which also contains GLP-1 receptors. They have multiple side effects, but in some ways, they act as a partial antidote to the “food noise” caused by processed foods. Don’t take this to mean I am a fan of GLP-1s. I see them as a temporary band-aid at best. What to do: The more elegant way to solve this problem is simply to eat unprocessed, single-ingredient foods (=food for humans)  that do not damage the infundibular nucleus of the hypothalamus. There are so many single ingredient foods that are delicious (meat, eggs, milk, cheese, fruit, honey, vegetables) that help restore  proper satiety signals and overall health. If you’ve made it this far, please send this to someone who is still counting calories and eating junk food but doesn’t understand how bad this is for their brain.
Do you keep waiting to feel motivated before you start and then wonder why you never seem to build momentum? 🧠 I’m a psychologist. And we get motivation completely backwards. We think we need to feel motivated first, then we’ll take action. But action is actually what creates the feeling. Not the other way around. One tiny action makes the next one easier. Then the next. Then the next. Open the document. Put your shoes on. Write one sentence. Send one email. So instead of asking “how do I make myself feel motivated?” .. ask .. “what’s the smallest action that could start the momentum?” You don’t need to feel ready. You just need one block to topple. 💛 Comment MINI and I’ll send you the link to my Pocket Psychologist Mini Course where I share pocket sized tips to help you through day to day. 🧠
