I can't believe I'm typing this but my story "Mama" has been selected for The Best American Mystery and Suspense 2026 edited by @stephycha and @melizaabbott . A BAMS placement two years in a row! Grateful doesn't even cover this honor.
"Mama" is about a young car thief and the older woman he steals a car from. It was published in the Genesis-themed crime music anthology In Too Deep edited by Adam Meyers. I heard about this anthology call on a whisper through the crime fiction community and knew I had to write one about this Genesis song.
I first heard it while watching the Death and Taxes episode of Magnum P.I. in 1986. It's been living in my head ever since. The song sung by Phil Collins is about a young man and an older prostitute. The TV show is about a serial killer.
Once again I am blown away to be in BAMS again. All thanks to Steph Cha, Megan Abbott and the team involved.
