Lightning struck twice when my story "Mama" got accepted for The Best American Mystery & Suspense 2026 edited by @stephycha and @melizaabbott . I'm so grateful for those two excellent writers who selected my crime story about a mixed up young car thief and a weary housewife. I would like to thank Adam Meyer the editor of In Too Deep: Crime Stories Inspired by the Songs of Genesis for originally publishing it. I heard whispers that someone was doing this anthology and the dark song Mama has always been a part of my pop culture memory. I would also like to thank @harpercollins and @marinerbooks for putting out the Best American series. All of these great collections should be displayed in your local bookstore soon. Love for you to check out my story but there are so many fantastic writers that I am proud to share a Table of Content with. Sara Gran, Cheryl Head, Shane Joaquin Jimenez, Meagan Lucas, David Morrell, Wanda Morris, M.E. Proctor, P.M. Raymond, Gabriela Stiteler, Paul Tremblay and more! At your local bookstores! Or you can order your copy now! https://www.harpercollins.com/products/the-best-american-mystery-and-suspense-2026-megan-abbottsteph-cha?variant=44759076667426 "Rob D. Smith's “Mama” begins with what feels like a classic noir setup—a broke young car thief falls for a married woman who entices him into a criminal act—but in the end it's their shared loneliness that opens up the story, tunneling its characters into something far more freighted and haunting." - Megan Abbott @therealdcbenny @paulgtremblay @gabrielastiteler @cheadwrites @MEProctor3 @christobollen @meaganlucasauthor @wandamowrites @maureenow @pmraymond_author @sara__gran @dreamlandbooks @shane_joaquin_jimenez @rjones_author by @robertdominicsmith

Coming this October!! Pre-order now!! “Crime fiction has always been outsider fiction, and this anthology, too, is a safe harbor for misfits and outcasts,” writes guest editor Megan Abbott. Full of wacky, peculiar, and eccentric characters, The Best American Mystery and Suspense 2026 features an enterprising dental hygienist who makes some extra money by collecting corpses for a funeral home, a sixth-grade girl who uses her competitive jump-roping skills to protect herself from looming danger, and a broke young car thief who falls for a married woman who entices him into a criminal act. A Violent Masterpiece should be on the Best of Lists at the end of this year. A pulsing exploration of the costs of trading your soul to work in the depths of celebrity Los Angeles. I reviewed it for Vautrin Magazine. https://vautrin.pub/2026/05/a-neon-hollywood-donnybrook-a-violent-masterpiece-by-jordan-harper/ by @robertdominicsmith
I can't believe I'm typing this but my story "Mama" has been selected for The Best American Mystery and Suspense 2026 edited by @stephycha and @melizaabbott . A BAMS placement two years in a row! Grateful doesn't even cover this honor. "Mama" is about a young car thief and the older woman he steals a car from. It was published in the Genesis-themed crime music anthology In Too Deep edited by Adam Meyers. I heard about this anthology call on a whisper through the crime fiction community and knew I had to write one about this Genesis song. I first heard it while watching the Death and Taxes episode of Magnum P.I. in 1986. It's been living in my head ever since. The song sung by Phil Collins is about a young man and an older prostitute. The TV show is about a serial killer. Once again I am blown away to be in BAMS again. All thanks to Steph Cha, Megan Abbott and the team involved. by @robertdominicsmith
