KIERA DIXON

It has been about a week since I had the honor and privilege of being sworn in as the Student Body President of UT Austin. This campaign was such an incredible journey, and it gave me the invaluable opportunity to look at myself and decide the kind of leader that I want to be. Those two weeks, I learned something new every day: about myself, about this campus, and about just how important this job is.

Looking back on the last 2 months, from the day this campaign started, to the day I took the oath of office, and to today, I am overwhelmed by a sense of gratitude that is impossible to put into words. All I can say is thank you. Thank you to each and every person who believed in our vision, who helped us table on Speedway for hours, who stopped by that table for a conversation, and who showed up for us during voting.

But in particular, there’s no one else I’m more grateful for than my Vice President, Jaden Watt, who had this radical idea our freshman year to become the President and Vice President of 55,000 students at UT Austin. You are incredible, and I’m lucky to work with you, but even luckier to know you and call you my friend. And thank you to Devon Stevenson, our former Campaign Manager turned Chief of Staff, who put countless hours into turning our ideas into action. You truly made this possible.

I also cannot talk about anything I’ve accomplished without thanking my mom, Alicia Dixon, who raised me and taught me my entire life to never be afraid to make my voice heard, to walk with confidence, and to always shoot for the moon. Mom, I love you, and I am SORRY for all the stress this campaign caused you.

And finally, to the 55,000 students at UT Austin, I thank you for the trust you have put in me to be your President, and I promise to serve you, advocate for you, and amplify your voices every single day of the next year. I am truly honored.
