To create the look of speaking out of one side of his mouth, Joaquin Phoenix worked with his dentist to attach small metal pieces to his teeth. They were originally fitted with rubber bands meant to help keep his mouth slightly clenched, but the bands didn’t really hold, so he eventually removed them.
Still, the metal pieces themselves, along with the discomfort they caused, were enough to constantly remind him of the character’s physical habits. That small but persistent irritation helped him stay in character and maintain that tense, uneven way of speaking throughout the performance.
