4 months agoCan I Be Him? I watch him pull you close and take your hand, Like he’s the king of everything you planned. He laughs at jokes I’ve memorized by heart, And plays the leading role, while I’m a part— A background shadow in your brightest day, With all the perfect things I cannot say. I see the way you look into his eyes, A soft devotion that you don't disguise. And every time he makes you smile or cry, A quiet storm begins to rise inside. Because I know the contours of your grief, And how to bring your heavy heart relief. I’d be the jacket when the wind is cold, The steady anchor that you get to hold. I’d count your freckles like a map of stars, And heal the hidden lines of all your scars. I'd love you with a fierce, unbroken grace, If I could only step into his place. He doesn't see the magic that I see, He holds the prize but locks away the key. So I will wait here on the outer rim, And whisper to the dark: Can I be him?
