26 years since being diagnosed with #type1diabetes. And ironically enough, on the first day of National Diabetes Awareness MonthπŸ’™ For most of my life, November 1st was just another day to me. My mom would always get emotional, but I never really did. I’d acknowledge it, maybe post something about it, and then go about my day. But something shifted last year when I hit 25 years. A quarter of a century. I remember thinking, wow. That’s a really long time to be doing this. And since then, I’ve started to experience my diaversary a little differently. I think for so many years, I was just moving through life. Managing my blood sugars, making decisions, figuring things out as I went. I never really stopped to think about the weight of what it means to do that every single day, year after year, since I was 7 years old. And I think there’s something really important about giving ourselves credit for that. For all the nights we’ve woken up to treat lows. All the days we’ve made hundreds of tiny decisions that nobody else sees. All the times we’ve had to keep showing up for ourselves, even when we were exhausted or frustrated or wished we could take a day off. 26 years of doing the work of keeping myself alive. And while I don’t want diabetes to be the thing that defines my life, I also don’t want to move so quickly through it that I forget to honor everything it’s taken to get here. So if you live with type 1 diabetes, I hope the next time your diaversary comes around, you give yourself a moment to really sit with it. Whether it’s been 1 year, 10 years, or 40. Think about everything you’ve carried, everything you’ve learned, and all the life you’ve lived alongside this disease. Because that deserves to be acknowledged. And so do you. ❀️
