Lifting heavy weights will improve your bone density.

A lot of the recommendations for “heavy weights” means above 80 percent of your max. To put it simply, that’s what you can lift for 6 reps or less.

It places a high mechanical load on the bone and signals your body to build stronger, denser bones. This is especially important for menopausal women and anyone wanting to age with strength and independence.

But, you can’t walk into the gym on day one and lift that heavy.

Even if your goal was to become the strongest powerlifter on the planet, I would never start you at 80 percent.

To lift heavy safely and effectively, you first need to:
• Learn how to lift with proper technique
• Build work capacity
• Build muscle and prepare your joints and connective tissues for higher loads

Lifting heavy is one of the best things you can do for bone health and longevity. But there is a process to earn the right to go heavy.

I competed in the @ocbchesapeakeclassic in Baltimore this past weekend! I had always thought about doing a show, so over the summer after I had moved I decided it was time. I did not hire a prep coach because I was worried I would feel less accountable for how my preparation went. As a result, my prep was far from perfect. I dieted way too fast, I did too much cardio, and prep was overall harder than it needed to be. At some point I accepted that my prep would be imperfect and I pushed on; even if my progress was not optimal, I accepted it as progress and I stopped worrying about being 100% efficient. I had signed up to try my hardest anyways, not necessarily win.

I am very happy with my results; I placed first in Novice Classic overall, first in Classic Open class A and second In Classic Open Overall. I was planning on doing only one show to scratch it off the bucket list, but it is painful to see how close I was to a pro card my first go. I am undecided as to whether I will do it all again, but if I do I will be much more prepared. I apologize for writing a book, I never thought I'd be the one writing the paragraph in their Ig caption lol.

Special shout out to my family and friends for all the encouragement, and to @averagely.jacked for the crash course on posing and peak week‼️ I am thankful for all of you.

I recently realized that somewhere along the way, I forgot how to play.

Not work out.
Not travel.
Not go to dinner.
Not do something that is technically “fun” but somehow still ends up being productive 🫠

I mean actually PLAY.

Do something for absolutely no reason other than: this is fun.

As high performers, we’re so used to having a purpose behind everything.

We train to get stronger.
We read to learn.
We travel and somehow turn it into content.
We rest so we can perform better.
Even our hobbies can become another thing we want to be good at.

And recently, I’ve been realizing how important it is to have parts of my life that don’t need to lead anywhere.

To laugh until my stomach hurts.
To be silly.
To try things I’m terrible at.
To do things without asking, “What am I getting out of this?”

Because I think one of the dangers of being extremely driven is that life can slowly become one big performance.

And you can become so focused on building an extraordinary life that you forget to actually enjoy living it.

Play brings me back to a part of myself that achievement can’t.

The curious part.
The spontaneous part.
The part that doesn’t need to prove, produce, improve, or achieve anything.

And ironically, I’m realizing that the more space I make for that version of me, the better I show up everywhere else too.

So this is something I’m learning in this season:

Not everything in my life needs to have a purpose.
Some things are allowed to exist simply because they make me feel alive.

And maybe for high performers, learning how to play again is part of the work too. 🤍
