You know how in certain books, the first word starts with a giant, stylized capital letter? As it turns out, those big, fancy letters can be a glitch-causing nightmare for screen-reading programs for the visually-impaired.
Jaxsen Day, a visually-impaired PhD student at the University of Texas Austin, says the fancy-letter issue is just one example of the many problems faced by modern accessibility tools.

Jaxsen used ChatGPT and Codex to solve a lot of those issues, building himself custom workflows that assist with everything from making academic research easier to access, to better interpreting funky, poorly-digitized PDFs.

Now, as part of his dissertation, he’s working with Mario Guerra, UT Austin’s Associate Vice President of AI Platforms and Innovation, to use AI to make reading materials more accessible campus-wide.

And the pressure is on: under new federal rules, public universities face an April 2027 deadline to ensure their websites and digital materials—including many academic readings—meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards.

Achieving accessibility at a university is far more complex than it sounds. Nearly every department has its own process of storing and digitizing research materials, so accessibility tools need to be as adaptive as their users.

But Jaxsen believes that if he can use ChatGPT and Codex to satisfy his own unique needs, there’s no reason whole departments can’t either. Now Jaxsen’s priority is sharing his AI-based methods campus-wide.

And after Jaxsen’s dissertation is complete? While he’s not exactly sure what’s next, he’s at least confident that it’ll take a lot more than a big, fancy letter to slow him down.
Is posting a faster marathon time on Strava rather than your official race result considered cheating? An online watchdog group is exposing runners over discrepancies in their times, but some athletes say they've faced harassment and abuse after being publicly called out. “I received so many threatening messages and comments belittling my achievement,” one runner said. “I could almost understand the shaming if it’s on professionals; however, when it’s normal people who are running for their own personal reasons or enjoyment, I think it’s disgusting.” Read @theathletichq's story at the link in bio. Many people might not know that the @nycmarathon is shepherded by a nonprofit called New York Road Runners, who are responsible for producing what might be the single most unifying event of the year. Not only is the marathon a great service to runners, it a great service to the New York community. Additionally the @nyrr holds numerous year-long programs for youth and adults which grow the popularity of the sport globally. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the five-borough race, and I was so happy to partner with NYRR to share the stories of two special NYC marathon runners. Congratulations to Laura and everyone else who ran and finished their own marathon stories today, and a big thank you to New York Road Runners for their important work inspiring people globally to experience the power of running.

NO PRESSURE! If it’s been awhile since you picked up your instrument of choice (pencils and brushes and dance shoes count), or you feel like you’ve lost a bit of the spark that you used to catch when you played, cut yourself some slack I’m certainly not the first person to articulate a version of this mindset, but I’m grateful that I’ve been able to explore it this week. I’m having funnnn dude I hope this gives you a lil’ nudge to spend a little less time on here and a little more time doing something you love purely for the fun of it And guitar players! hit me with your favorite riff to play!
