After stripping and initial sanding of our door, we did a final sanding with 220 grit. We lightly drew pencil squiggles on the bare wood to help us know which areas had been sanded to keep it as even as possible. We applied pre-stain conditioner to the exterior side, then 2 coats of
@minwaxusa wood stain in the color Provincial 211. Afterwards, we applied 3 finish coats of
@varathane waterbased polyurethane in clear Satin.
The interior side really struggled with an ashy finish after staining due to the age & dryness of the door, so before applying the finish, we tried wiping with a cloth dampened with mineral spirits with no real improvement. Ultimately, we re-sanded to bare wood and applied a Minwax pre-stain conditioner which helped. Learning as we go!!
Next reel is figuring out the hardware and trying to keep as much original to this 1938 door as possible.
