Sharing our traumas isn't wrong and can be a healthy part of a relationship, but we can do too much of it when we're insecure in our attachments to other people and miss out on strengthening our bonds in other ways. I think this is especially true of women in community with other women, because we're often dealing with similar traumas and we can struggle to have boundaries with each other. I'm not saying we should never share our traumas, but sometimes we can feel like we can't trust that someone truly understands or cares for us if they haven't seen all the messiest and darkest parts of our stories, and trauma dumping can be a way that we seek reassurance that we're accepted and wanted. Being extremely vulnerable might be a way that we offer ourselves to someone, both to feel connected with them and to repeatedly give them the opportunity to reject us, because we fear that they will. If you have what feels like a compulsive need to share the details of all of your worst traumas with someone you hope to have a relationship with, working on resisting that urge might actually help you form a more stable and enduring connection with them that's based on the way you tend the relationship rather than a forced sense of intimacy. You're not "tricking" someone into liking you if you haven't shared all of the ugly parts of your story, and constantly seeking assurance that you won't be rejected or abandoned won't actually ever make the fear of it go away. Letting yourself experience connections that don't hinge on that forced intimacy will probably help more in the long run. ***IMAGE TEXT*** Trauma dumping on people without their consent isn't ok, but constantly trauma dumping on people even WITH their consent isn't good for anyone involved either. Exposing your deepest wounds in graphic detail can be a way of forcing intimacy in a relationship, and a shortcut around building trust and intimacy in it by actively nurturing the relationship over time. The urge to trauma dump might lessen if you give yourself the chance to discover less emotionally charged ways of bonding with people. #WomenEmpowerment #WomenSupportingWomen #Relationships #MentalHealth #SelfEsteem
