There’s a lake in Australia called Lake Hillier that stays bubblegum pink year-round, and scientists still can’t fully explain why. From above, the lake looks almost artificial - a perfect strip of bright pink water sitting beside the deep blue Southern Ocean. What makes it even stranger is that the color doesn’t disappear when the water is collected in a bottle; it remains pink even outside the lake itself. Researchers believe a combination of salt-loving microorganisms, algae, and unique minerals create the effect, but no single explanation accounts for its exact shade. The lake sits on a remote island that few people ever visit, making it feel more like a digital rendering than a real place. Against the surrounding white sand and dense eucalyptus forest, the contrast is so dramatic that pilots often describe it as one of the most surreal sights on Earth. Despite its unusual appearance, the water is considered safe to touch, and the lake has remained naturally pink for as long as records have existed. It’s one of those rare places that looks edited even when you’re standing right in front of it.
