🏆 Still taking this one in…
I was recognized as the inaugural Artist Legislative Champion at Arts Advocacy Day!
About a year ago, murals turned into me buying a suit and testifying in front of Senate + Assembly committees. This award is in recognition of my advocacy work with SB456 (a.k.a. “The Mural Bill”) which unanimously passed and is now California state law 💥
Feeling really grateful, proud, and still a little mind blown.
I’ll share more BTS details in a future post, for now I’m sharing this moment and sitting in gratitude.
Special thanks to Senator Ashby for authoring the bill, Donald Gensler - who brought me into this work and testified beside me - and to Julie Baker for her leadership. Thank you to California Arts Advocates and League of California Cities for co-sponsoring SB456. Thank you California for the Arts for this recognition.
A lot happened last year, both in front of microphones and behind the scenes - including painting murals while simultaneously advocating for the right to do so. Being recognized in this space, alongside leaders and advocates across the state, feels surreal.
Definitely did not have “testifying at the Capitol and changing state law” on my bingo card! 😅
