🤔 Remember the whole “mural thing”?

A few years ago public mural projects - and HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of public art dollars - were put on hold. Apparently, painting a mural over $1000 without a contractor’s license was illegal in California, and letters had begun circulating to public agencies, highlighting a decades-old law which had never been enforced. 🏃🏽‍♀️🚓

Because murals are art…right?

Enter Senate Bill 456 (a.k.a. “The Mural Bill”), authored by Senator Angelique Ashby. It clarifies that muralists in California are artists, not contractors (which sounds blindingly obvious, but legally it wasn’t). The bill helps protect artists from costly/unnecessary licensing requirements.

I bought a suit and testified in front of Senate + Assembly committees.

For me, this work was high-stakes and freedom of expression. The outcome didn’t just affect my livelihood - it impacted the mural ecosystem across California, for artists now and for the next gen.

The work was exciting, empowering, sometimes frustrating and honestly scary because I was actively painting murals while advocating for the right to paint them in the first place. At the time (and for decades) this work existed in a legal gray area.

✊🏽 This was a statewide effort backed by a coalition of California artists, orgs, and advocates.
Major props to all the muralists who spoke out about SB456.

Sitting in front of legislators, I heard them express how important murals are to California - thanking artists for the work they do, and signing on as bill co-authors, giving it bipartisan support.

When the arts are often undervalued or at risk, SB456 passed unanimously and was signed into law on January 1, 2026We changed California law 💥

SB456 has effectively reopened public art mural opportunities across the state, so now murals are back on track for California artists!

Thank you Senator Ashby for authoring the bill, Donald Gensler (who testified beside me) and to Julie Baker with CA For the Arts for her leadership. Thank you California Arts Advocates and League of California Cities for co-sponsoring SB456.

This is an epic win for artists!

🔥New #girlpower mural drop 💪🏽

❤️🧡💛”See Me. I Am Love” This one for @wellspringwomenscenter was a blast! So happy I could collaborate with these beautiful people. Wellspring is an incredible organization in Oak Park, Sacramento — they assist women and their children in need, offer art therapy, and a hot meal. Being able to highlight Wellspring and dig my roots further into my neighborhood lights me up ☺️ So much gratitude…

💖 Mural design inspired by conversations with Wellspring’s guests depicting Wellspring’s energy and impact on the women who frequent the center.

Can we talk about this for a second? 👇

There are thousands of insanely talented creatives out there who were NEVER taught the business side of their craft. No one told them about pricing, contracts, strategy, or sustainability.

Amy Kweskin is changing that — and artist Jaya calls it exactly what it is: the missing link.

Nobody asked. Caity answered anyway. 🐦😂

We came to talk about art and somehow ended up in a full lecture on rock pigeons. Turns out your city council member is a certified bird nerd — and honestly? We're here for it.

🌈 RAINBOW 🌈

I’m honored to be included in RAINBOW, an international group exhibition at Whitney Modern, guest-curated by Marie Cameron.

The exhibition brings together 38 artists working across a wide range of colorful and unapologetically vibrant mediums. I’m especially excited that 2 works from my new Pretty series are making their debut in this exhibition alongside such a dopamine-dripping spectrum of artists.

✨ Reception:
June 4, 5–8 PM

✨ Closing Reception:
June 20, 2–5 PM

I’ll be attending the June 20 reception if you’d like to stop by and say hello!
