Tennessee de@th row inmate #ChristaPike was hospitalized after two attempts to execute her by lethal injection failed Wednesday night.

Pike, 50, was reportedly given two sets of pentobarbital at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, but remained alive after both were administered. Her attorneys filed an emergency motion during the execution, stating, “Ms Pike has lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat and is audibly snoring.” She was subsequently taken to an outside hospital for what one of her attorneys described as “life-saving measures.” Tennessee Gov. #BillLee has since ordered a third-party review into what went wrong and halted the state’s final scheduled execution of the year. The Tennessee Department of Correction maintains that staff followed the state’s established execution protocol.

Pike’s attorneys, however, blamed several alleged problems with the process, including difficult vein access and concerns about the lethal injection drug. “Tonight the State of #Tennessee once again failed to carry out a lawful execution,” her legal team said, adding that concerns they previously raised about “difficult vein access, blown veins, degraded pentobarbital” and emergency medical care had come to fruition. Medical expert Dr. Joel Zivot said Pike may not have received a sufficient level of pentobarbital to cause respiratory and cardiovascular failure and warned that the delay before resuscitation could potentially result in brain injury.

Pike was sentenced to de@th in 1996 for the 1995 m*rder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Pike, who was 18 at the time, and her then-boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp beat, tortured and k!lled Slemmer after meeting her at a job-training camp for troubled teens. Slemmer was later found with an inverted pentagram carved into her chest, though Pike has denied personally carving the symbol. Witnesses testified that Pike bragged about the k!lling and showed others a piece of Slemmer’s skull. In a recent clemency petition, Pike said she intended to beat Slemmer but not k!ll her, stating, “I was a mentally ill 18-year-old kid,” and acknowledging that she took “the life of someone’s child, sister, friend.”

Today marks 35 years on earth.

Fifteen of those years have been spent with many of you, those who found me in the Tumblr days and somehow stayed long enough to witness all the versions of me that followed.
When I began sharing my work online 15 years ago, part of my mission was simple: I wanted people, (particularly young Africans) to take greater pride and ownership in their creativity. To see the work of their hands as something worthy. To understand that creativity did not have to be frivolous or secondary….that it could be purpose, language, livelihood, legacy.

Ironically, I had to learn that lesson for myself.
As a Nigerian-born girl, my earliest dreams were not rooted in the creative arts. I remember reading Gifted Hands by Ben Carson when I was about ten years old and thinking, I want to be that.

For years, I imagined a life in medicine. I wanted to become a surgeon, or at the very least work closely alongside one. It felt respectable. Sensible. Admirable.

It was the kind of ambition that made sense within the environment in which I was raised, one where certain titles seemed to carry a particular kind of reverence. Doctor. Lawyer. Engineer. There was a blueprint for success, and I was determined to follow it.

Until, at 23, I realized I was building a life I thought I should want rather than one that was honest about who I was. So I dropped out of nursing school.
Brazen. Hopeful. Probably a little naïve. But determined to discover whether I could build a life worthwhile with nothing more than my ideas, the work of my hands, and the creativity God had given me. And somehow, by the grace of God, I did.

There were years of uncertainty. Years of sacrifice. Years when I had very little evidence that the life I imagined would ever materialize. But there were also extraordinary years, years when my gifts opened doors I could never have orchestrated for myself, carried me across the world, introduced me to people and places I once only dreamed of, and allowed me to experience the tangible rewards of my labor.

This year, 35 also meets another milestone: 10 years of @shopa.au
