Margaret Theresa of Spain was an Infanta of Spain and through her marriage to Emperor Leopold I, Holy Roman Empress. Born in Madrid on 12 July 1651, she was the daughter of Philip IV of Spain and his second wife, Mariana of Austria. As a member of the Spanish Habsburg dynasty, Margaret occupied a central position in the dynastic politics of seventeenth-century Europe, when royal marriages served as instruments of diplomacy.

Margaret became widely known through the portraits painted by Diego Velázquez, particularly Las Meninas (1656), which depicts her as a young princess surrounded by members of the Spanish court. These works offer more than intimate representations of royal childhood: they reveal the elaborate visual culture of the Habsburg monarchy, in which the representation of royal bodies and lineage communicated political authority. Her image circulated across European courts.

In 1666, at the age of fifteen, Margaret married her maternal uncle, Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, in Vienna. The union strengthened the political and familial ties between the Spanish and Austrian branches of the Habsburg dynasty. Margaret subsequently became Holy Roman Empress, Queen of Germany and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia. Her position was inseparable from the reproductive expectations imposed upon early modern royal women. She was pregnant seven times, gave birth to six children, although only one daughter, Maria Antonia, survived infancy.

Margaret Theresa died in Vienna on 12 March 1673, aged only twenty-one, after years of deteriorating health associated with repeated pregnancies.
