Democrat Gina Hinojosa secured victory over three-term Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, the Associated Press said, a stunning flip in the country’s most populous red state after more than three decades of Republican leadership.⁠ ⁠ With 67% of the expected vote counted, Hinojosa had 57% to Abbott’s 42%.⁠ ⁠ Hinojosa, a 52-year-old lawyer and state representative, began her race as a Democratic longshot against a governor known for his political prowess and formidable campaign war chest. But she gained momentum from voter dissatisfaction with Trump administration policies and the economy under Republican leadership.⁠ ⁠ Hinojosa surprised many Texas political observers by gaining on Abbott in polls ahead of the election, despite being vastly outspent.
