Gordon Parks was one of the most influential American artists of the twentieth century, a pioneering photographer, filmmaker, writer, and composer whose work reshaped how Black life was seen and understood. As the first African American staff photographer at Life magazine, Parks used his camera to confront racism, poverty, and segregation while revealing the dignity, beauty, and complexity of his subjects. His practice extended beyond documentation, making art a powerful instrument for social justice and a means of giving visibility to lives and experiences too often excluded from the American narrative. In the video, Joeonna Bellorado-Samuels (@joeonna), a senior director at Jack Shainman Gallery (@jackshainman), introduces 'Gordon Parks: Voices in the Mirror' at the gallery’s Tribeca location. Marking the 20th anniversary of The Gordon Parks Foundation (@gordonparksfoundation), the exhibition brings together Parks’s photographs with the memories and perspectives of the people he documented. These personal stories offer a deeper understanding of the circumstances behind the images, from experiences of segregation to the tenderness and complexity of everyday Black life.
