After weeks of controversy, Dampf Good Barbecue has ended its plans for a brick-and-mortar location in downtown Durham.

Owner Nick Dampf posted a video on Instagram Wednesday morning to announce the award-winning food truck would not open in the former Pit restaurant near Geer Street.

The news of Dampf coming to Durham quickly sparked a backlash on social media and Reddit, as critics shared screenshots of past social media posts critical of COVID-era vaccine policies, LGBTQ families, drag shows and abortion.

Dampf has apologized for his political statements, but he defends the views as consistent with his Christian faith.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Turkish agents captured Kurdish PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan after luring him out of the Greek embassy in Nairobi, Kenya in February 1999.

Öcalan founded the Marxist-Leninist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) which had been in armed conflict with the Turkish government since 1984. More than 30,000 people had died by 1999, and the PKK was declared a terror group by the United States and other nations.

Öcalan spent most of his time operating from Syria until he was forced to leave following diplomatic pressure by Turkey and the US. He then sought asylum in several countries including Italy, Russia, and Greece. Although he had many supporters in Greece, the government there refused to shelter him due to the tension it would create with Turkey. After a flight to the Hague was turned back, the Greeks flew him to their embassy in Nairobi while they tried to assist in finding a country that would grant him asylum.

However, pressure quickly built as CIA and the Turkish MIT intelligence agency were aware of his presence in Nairobi. After 15 days in the embassy, the situation had become untenable. Öcalan was transported to the airport but forced to ride in a Kenyan government jeep rather than a Greek diplomatic vehicle.

Turkish agents landed in a Falcon 900B jet which had been repainted blue and adorned with a Malaysian flag. Öcalan boarded the jet, believing it was a flight to South Africa arranged by the Kenyan government and was seized.

Turkey released the video footage immediately after he was captured. Öcalan was tried and sentenced to death in 1999, but his sentence was commuted to life in prison in 2002 after Turkey abolished the death penalty nationwide.

Three Greek cabinet members and the chief of their EYP national intelligence agency were forced to resign for their roles in the debacle.
