Question: What do you do if or when you overwork a painting? Can it be fixed?
First we have to define what fixing means in painting. Can it be fixed? Absolutely- if it means evolving with your previous decisions.
Aside from documenting stages of progression in your painting, it is helpful to make space for impulse by introducing a second surface. The reason for that is probably obvious to some but overlooked by many: at some point in our process, we almost develop blindness to the image. We need to pause and decide whether to push forward or step away. Starting a second surface and taking risks there can make our inquiries feel less consequential and hopefully, more fun. Play is crucial for the evolution of our work, and we want to create enough distance to allow new discoveries to come through our curiosity.
