A couple of days ago a student asked me what I like about watercolor. The more I thought about it, the more reasons came to mind. I decided to take an opportunity to write them down in case anyone else might have the same question or be curious about trying watercolor for themselves. So, here are ten reasons why I like watercolor, followed by a caption for the painting above. 1. The history of watercolor: illuminated manuscripts, marginalia, miniature painting, etc. there are so many great works to appreciate! 2. I like paper. It’s something I’ve always liked and (I hope I eat these words someday) I think canvas is a really boring material to work with. 3. I like that watercolor tends to go down in thin layers. Texture can be distracting, IMO 4. It’s the first time I’ve ever been excited about my materials. I enjoy my brushes, paints, palette, frames, and pretty much every part of the process. 5. When using watercolor, I don’t leave the studio covered in paint. 6. It’s easier to stay organized, work small, and keep things portable. I don’t have any storage issues with watercolor. 7. I like mediums that dry quickly. 8. When sealed (with something like Dorland’s wax medium), it’s protected and safe from damage similar to acrylic or oil. 9. It’s the right tool for the job. The things that I value in painting can be communicated more efficiently in watercolor. 10. Why not?
