GENESIS • PHIL COLLINS • IN TOO DEEP • 1987
“In Too Deep” is a song by the English rock band Genesis (lead by Phil Collins), included as the fourth track on their 13th studio album, “Invisible Touch” (1986).
The single was successful in the US, reaching No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It peaked on the charts during the Summer of 1987.
Phil Collins has sold over 150 million records worldwide as a solo artist, with his 1985 album No Jacket Required leading his sales with over 25 million copies. Along with his work in Genesis, he is one of only three artists to sell over 100 million albums both as a solo artist and as a band member.
This breakup song is about a guy who thought he found his everlasting love, but is now watching it tear apart. He would like to repair the damage, but can’t, since he is “in too deep.”
A band composition, the lyrics come courtesy of Phil Collins, who wrote some very personal heartbreakers after his 1980 divorce, but was remarried by the time he wrote this song. At the time, his Genesis songs were generally written in character and crafted for hit potential. It did the trick: “In Too Deep” became the fourth of five Top 5 singles from the Invisible Touch album (Source: Songfacts).
The song’s vocal and sound are filled with sadness and desperation, followed by resignation. It is quite a journey. The melody of the verse and chorus don’t feel like the most natural fit, but sound so great together. Note the excellent use of synthesizer– used as a background instrument to add depth of sound. A lot of 80s songs get that wrong: “In Too Deep” does it right. Phil Collins voice is distinct and quite beautiful here. He uses falsetto sparingly for emphasis, and he transitions into it quite nicely (Source: thegreatestsongs.com).
