Brazil’s defeated right-wing presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has declared himself the country’s rightful leader after fleeing to the United States. His defiance follows President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory in Sunday’s runoff election. In a statement posted on X, Bolsonaro alleged electoral fraud and accused his opponents of stealing the election. He vowed to lead the opposition from Florida, later revising his claim from being the elected “president” to the country’s “leader.” The Trump administration maintains close ties with the Bolsonaro family, including Flávio’s father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is under house arrest over his attempt to overturn the 2022 election.
