Viral videos where owners fake fainting in front of their pets aren’t just funny pranks. They’re a large-scale ethological experiment that has revealed what science has long tried to deny: animals possess cognitive empathy and are capable of self-sacrifice.
The Neurobiology of Compassion
When an animal sees a member of its pack fall, mirror neurons are activated in its brain. These are special cells that cause the brain to “experience” another’s pain as its own. In dogs, elephants, and great apes, the density of these neurons is comparable to that in humans.
For them, your fainting spell is not a “glitch” in the system, but a signal of critical vulnerability. At this moment, the animal experiences a powerful surge of cortisol (the stress hormone) and oxytocin. The latter compels them not to flee from danger, but to move closer to protect the weak.
The Ethology of Rescue: Pack Protocols
In the wild, the “loss” of one group member is a threat to all. Therefore, highly organized species have developed clear support mechanisms:
1. Physical barrier. In the video, we see dogs or even cats lying on top of the “victim.” This is a protocol to protect the body from predators and an attempt to warm a fellow creature whose blood pressure has dropped.
2. Tactile resuscitation. Licking the face and nudging with the nose is not an act of tenderness, but an attempt to revive consciousness by stimulating nerve endings.
3. Social vigil. There are known cases where elephants stayed by a sick fellow elephant for days on end, bringing it food and water in their trunks. Among dolphins, the group keeps the injured one at the water’s surface so it doesn’t drown.
The Great Divide: Instinct or Consciousness?
Society has once again split into two irreconcilable camps:
Camp A: Supporters of “birobots.” They argue that this is merely a chain of unconditional reflexes. The animal is simply afraid of losing a source of resources (food) and panics.
Camp B: Defenders of emotional intelligence. They are convinced that this is a manifestation of pure love and conscious empathy, which predates human speech. ⬇️⬇️⬇️
