๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ โ€œwhy donโ€™t you just ignore them?โ€ I refuse to accept this behavior as normal and tolerable. I want climbing to feel safe for everyone. I know that some of these may feel extreme/outliers but they are part of a cumulative effect. These behaviors are not okay on any level and shouldnโ€™t have a place in climbing in any capacity. Climbing has long had the habit of silencing hard conversations and any of these comments could be the stepping stone to a larger dialogue. New Work: a few years ago, I bought a 150 year old farm house on Long Island. My good friend, designer @stevengambrel, stopped by to see what I had done, and then said โ€œD, I really want to do this house for youโ€. Was this a threat or a promise? To have one of the best in the world offer to design your home was exciting and daunting. And of course I said yes, and there were plenty of sleepless nights when I wished I had said no. I mean, was there really any reason to worry, I had the titans of the industry on the team: AD100 designer Steven Gambrel, @marcusziemke, a young and well practiced architect with a design wisdom beyond his years; Steve White at @oceanbuildingcorp, a builder on Long Island responsible for constructing the homes of billionaires in The Hamptons, and another good friend, @marthastewart48, designing the landscape and gardens. Whatโ€™s the worst that could happen? One year became two, a couple more accounts drained. But with the help of some of the best craftspeople and trades out there, we built something beyond my expectations; a house that speaks to its past and one that embraces a life more contemporary.
