A woman keeps a pair of broken speakers in her garage and announces every single week, “I’m taking those to the dump tomorrow.” Her family hears this so often that they stop reacting altogether. Three weeks pass. Then three months. Then a year. Every time she gets ready to load the speakers into her car, she suddenly sneezes. Not just once, either. She sneezes so dramatically that the entire mission is postponed. Somehow this turns into a fifteen-year saga. The speakers become permanent members of the household. Holiday decorations are arranged around them. Neighborhood children grow up assuming they’re part of the architecture. Meanwhile, the woman continues sneezing at the exact moment she considers disposing of them. By year fifteen, the speakers are covered in dust and have acquired nicknames. One afternoon she finally declares, “That’s it. Today they’re going to the dump.” She reaches for them, sneezes loudly enough to startle a squirrel three blocks away, and postpones the trip yet again. The speakers remain undefeated champions of avoiding disposal, while the woman earns a reputation as the only person ever outmaneuvered by her own allergies for a decade and a half.
