“I am Jane Doe” It takes incredible courage to tell the story of a sexual assault. Heavy drinking is so normalized in college, and it’s perfectly acceptable until someone else takes advantage of you. Then it’s easier to blame you for your choices, not the people who took away your right to choose. In 2021, I was assaulted by someone I considered a friend. I was blamed, scrutinized, and interrogated by people that knew him, refusing to believe he was capable of this. Meanwhile, I too was trying to comprehend how this could be the person I knew. I only knew it was true because I was there, and I had remembered what happened to me. I had nothing to gain from a false accusation. Too often, the first response is, “he wouldn’t do that” before “I believe you.” After feeling isolated, I decided to report the assault to the university. I was told I had a stronger case than most - text messages, pictures and videos from that night proving I was unable to consent, given my level of intoxication (unconscious, throwing up). After a student conduct investigation, my perpetrator was suspended from the school. I finally had relief that the school believed me, and that my bravery to come forward was worth it after all. I later received news that he had submitted an appeal, and the punishment was undone. I can’t put into words how devastating it was to get handed a slice of justice, just to have it ripped away in an instant. It took years to rebuild my confidence, and to comprehend that the strength to move on and heal must be found from within, even without external validation. But frankly- no one should have to go through this to learn a hard life lesson. #virginiatech #cornell7 Shortly before I was sexually assaulted (2021) Source: https://svpe.vt.edu/svpe-voices-peer-educators/svpe-voices-faq.html Protecting someone’s future should never come at the expense of someone else’s healing. Approximately one-third of college students who experience sexual assault drop out of school. I’m sharing all of this because I barely found the strength to continue my education but am so glad that I did. I’ll never forgot the community I found shortly after. It may not be the right p
