We dreamed of creating a show that felt unmistakably us; something that pulled our beautiful audience into our world for a little while and made them want to stay forever. “Endless” was our way of making that feeling real, from revisiting our archive and the pieces that made our community first fall in love, to the next little worlds we’ve been keeping secret, to all the faces on the runway who have been part of the Kulani story long before tonight.

Some things need to be said out loud because too many women are still shrinking themselves for spaces that were never designed for their full selves. They are:

Staying quiet
Avoiding disagreement
Second-guessing themselves

Why, you ask? Because they’ve seen what happens to women who speak too directly, ask too much, or refuse to make themselves smaller.

They’re called difficult, aggressive, demanding.

Society is in rush to label them “Too much”

But asking for fairness isn’t too much.

Expecting equal partnership isn’t too much.

Wanting respect for your time, labour, ambition, and contribution isn’t too much.

The problem isn’t that women are asking for too much. It’s that society has become far too comfortable expecting women to settle for less.

This is for all of you holding it together with a smile.

I saw this quote the other day, and it was like a kick in my side haha, so many people I know just try their best to put on a brave face in order to meet the day with what they hope it is. That’s a special power but it can come at a cost. Never let yourself forget that it’s okay to need help, to ask for it, to have rest without deserving or earning it. Rest is a necessity. Grace is something you need to offer yourself.

You have spent your whole life feeling like you’re not enough and yet here you are doing so much for so many people without even acknowledging the good things you bring. Your expectations for who you are or who you should be are too high and unrealistic! you don’t need to be a super hero. Please give yourself some time and space and kindness.

And if you know people like this in your life, please look out for them. Listen to them. The ones who are always doing their best to take care of everyone else, they might be the ones who need the most help!
