On this day in 1994, researchers working for the U.S. Air Force drafted a three-page proposal that sounds less like military strategy and more like rejected satire: a hypothetical chemical weapon that would make enemy soldiers sexually attracted to one another.The proposal emerged from a broader effort to explore non-lethal weapons during the 1990s. Among the concepts being considered was the possibility of dispersing a substance that could influence attraction and, in theory, create enough distraction or disruption to affect battlefield effectiveness. There was just one problem: no known science supported the idea.Even at the time, there was no evidence that any chemical, pheromone, or aerosol could alter a person’s sexual orientation or instantly create sexual attraction. The proposal remained little more than speculation on paper, and no such weapon was ever developed.The documents didn’t become public until years later, when they were obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. Once released, the proposal quickly became known as the “Gay Bomb” and earned a place in the long history of government ideas that are equal parts fascinating and baffling.The story is funny, but it’s also revealing. In the mid-1990s, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was still in effect, LGBTQ+ service members were still being forced to hide who they were, and homosexuality was often viewed by military leadership as something disruptive rather than simply human.That context helps explain why someone could seriously suggest weaponizing same-sex attraction in the first place.Three decades later, the proposal survives mostly as an odd historical footnote and a reminder that some of the strangest moments in LGBTQ+ history didn’t happen on the fringes. They happened in government offices, were written into official documents, and were filed away until someone eventually asked to see them.
