Neighbors, if you are thinking about having a balloon release in Louisiana, make sure you do it soon. The state has officially outlawed the intentional outdoor release of helium-filled Mylar and latex balloons after the passage of House Bill 851, a measure aimed at reducing environmental damage and protecting wildlife across the state.

The new law, which takes effect on August 1, 2026, prohibits balloon releases often used to celebrate special occasions or memorialize loved ones. According to the Louisiana Wildlife Federation (LWF), discarded balloons frequently end up in marshes, waterways, forests, and neighborhoods throughout the state. Wildlife can mistake balloon fragments for food, leading to injury or death when the debris is ingested. Balloon remnants can also become entangled in animals and damage sensitive habitats.

Officials also pointed to risks posed to power lines and electrical infrastructure. Balloon debris can interfere with utility equipment, causing power outages, safety concerns, and costly repairs. Suggested alternatives include flying kites, blowing bubbles, releasing flower petals, planting trees or gardens, holding candlelight vigils, ringing bells, creating community art projects, organizing service events, or making charitable donations in someone’s memory.
