My first Eid Al Adha without my mother, Zarine Sanjay Khan… and yet, somehow, she was everywhere last night.

Eid at our home was never just about food. It was about love, warmth, beauty, and bringing people together. My mother would prepare every detail impeccably — from her legendary biryani and delicacies, to the silverware, flowers, candles, embroidered napkins, and beautifully laid tables with space for everyone, vegetarian and non-vegetarian alike. But more than anything, people came for her — for the love and care with which she welcomed every guest.

Yesterday, as a family, we tried to continue what she created for so many years. We invited friends and family at the last minute because honestly, we didn’t know if we could do it without her. But somehow, we did. And I truly felt her blessings in the room.

One of my favourite Eid rituals with her was taking pictures together before guests arrived because she and I were always the first ones ready. My father, Sanjay Khan, would eventually laugh and say, “Bus karo na Zarine… kitne photo loge tum log?” And we would all laugh.

Last night, I was the first to arrive at my parents’ home… and I missed taking her pictures so deeply. So I took one in the place she always sat and quietly asked her to help me make the evening beautiful.

And somehow… she did.

For the first time in a long time, it truly felt like a celebration again.

Thank you to all our friends and family who came at such short notice. Only Zarine Khan could still bring people together like that. ❤️

Eid Mubarak.
