After walking through the underground corridors beneath the Vestibule, you suddenly emerge onto the Riva, Splitโs lively waterfront promenade. When Emperor Diocletian built his palace in AD 305, the sea reached all the way to the southern wall, allowing him to enter directly from a ship through the Bronze Gate. The Riva itself only took shape in the early 19th century under Napoleonic rule, when part of the coastline was reclaimed to create a broad promenade along the harbour. Over time, French ideas blended with Venetian influences, creating the elegant waterfront that became the cityโs meeting place. In 2005, the Riva was completely redesigned with its modern appearance, palm trees and terraces, a project that sparked plenty of debate among locals. Today it is the social heart of Split, where locals and visitors gather to stroll.
