And here we are. Here I am at the foot of Paris’ most iconic structure: the Eiffel Tower. 🗼🇫🇷 The steel structure was designed by talented engineer Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World’s Fair, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. 🔧🎉 It was intended as a temporary structure at the time, but its elegance and craftsmanship convinced the authorities to preserve it. 🏗️💼 At 324 meters tall, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest building in the world when it was completed, and it remains one of the most recognizable symbols of France. ⬆️🇫🇷

Wonder how I got here? 🦙👀

Whenever I’m home for a little while between travels, I love wandering around and discovering beautiful places nearby. 🏡✨ And Maastricht is definitely one of those places! 🇳🇱❤️

This time, I visited the Museum of Illusions, where 50+ illusions made me question what my eyes were seeing. 👀🌀 I walked through a Vortex Tunnel, saw myself in a kaleidoscope, had dinner with… myself, and even made the most colourful shadows! 🌈🦙

I’m still not entirely sure how some of these tricks work, but I had so much fun trying to figure them out! 🤯😂

Would you dare to visit this place? 🫣💭

📍Maastricht, Mosae Forum 12-18

Zou jij deze plek durven bezoeken? 🫣💭

After walking through the underground corridors beneath the Vestibule, you suddenly emerge onto the Riva, Split’s lively waterfront promenade. 🚶🏛️ When Emperor Diocletian built his palace in AD 305, the sea reached all the way to the southern wall, allowing him to enter directly from a ship through the Bronze Gate. 🚪🌊The Riva itself only took shape in the early 19th century under Napoleonic rule, when part of the coastline was reclaimed to create a broad promenade along the harbour. 🇫🇷🏗️ Over time, French ideas blended with Venetian influences, creating the elegant waterfront that became the city’s meeting place. 🏛️🌊 In 2005, the Riva was completely redesigned with its modern appearance, palm trees and terraces, a project that sparked plenty of debate among locals. 🌴🏙️ Today it is the social heart of Split, where locals and visitors gather to stroll.

The ancient underground tunnels and cellars below the Vestibule lead to Split’s Riva, which we saw earlier. 🕯️⛏️ These massive stone corridors were built in the 4th century to support the emperor’s private apartments above and level the palace against the sloping coastline. 🧱👑 Diocletian could even enter the palace directly from the sea through the southern Bronze Gate, without stepping into the city itself. 🚪🌊 Today you can still walk through the dimly lit passages beneath the palace, following the same route that once connected the imperial quarters to the Adriatic coast and the Riva promenade outside. 🚶✨ Some corridors are like secret tunnels, with dripping stone walls, hidden chambers and echoes that make the palace seem frozen somewhere between the Roman Empire and modern Split. 🕳️⏳

Behind the Peristyle lies one of the most atmospheric spaces inside Diocletian’s Palace: the 𝘝𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘭𝘦. 🏛️✨This circular hall once formed the grand entrance to the emperor’s private apartments, reserved for selected guests and ambassadors. 👑🚪Built in the 4th century, the space was originally covered by a huge dome, but today only the open oculus remains, framing the sky above Split. 🌤️⭕ Thanks to its remarkable acoustics, the Vestibule has become one of the most famous places in Dalmatia to hear klapa singing. 🎶🇭🇷 Klapa is traditional multipart a cappella singing from the Croatian coast, performed by small groups standing closely together in a semicircle. 🎵🫶 The songs often revolve around love, the sea, daily life and Dalmatian identity, with voices blending together instead of relying on instruments. ❤️🌊 I was lucky enough to hear a live klapa performance echoing through the ancient Roman walls, turning the Vestibule into one of the most memorable places in Split. ⏳🏛️

The Peristyle was once the ceremonial courtyard of Diocletian’s Palace, where the emperor appeared before visitors and subjects. 🏛️👑 Surrounded by Roman columns and arches, the square connected the imperial apartments, temples, and what later became the Cathedral of 𝘚𝘷𝘦𝘵𝘪 𝘋𝘶𝘫𝘦. ⛪📜 One of the most striking details is the black granite sphinx from Egypt, brought here nearly 3,500 years ago. 🐫🗿 Today, during summer evenings, the Peristyle often fills with live music, performances, and visitors sitting on the warm stone steps beneath the cathedral tower. 🎶🌙 During the celebrations of 𝘚𝘷𝘦𝘵𝘪 𝘋𝘶𝘫𝘦, this square once again becomes one of the busiest places in Split. 🇭🇷🌊

What once served as the resting place of Diocletian is today the Cathedral of 𝘚𝘷𝘦𝘵𝘪 𝘋𝘶𝘫𝘦. ⛪🦙 The irony is hard to miss: the emperor known for persecuting Christians was eventually buried inside a building that later became a Christian cathedral. 🏛️✝️ Built around AD 305 in the vast palace complex, the octagonal structure was transformed by the refugees who settled inside the palace walls into a church. 🏺🇭🇷 The cathedral was dedicated to Saint Domnius, or 𝘚𝘷𝘦𝘵𝘪 𝘋𝘶𝘫𝘦, the patron saint of Split and a bishop from Salona who was executed during Diocletian’s persecutions in 304. ✨📜 His relics were brought here and became central to the city’s religious identity. 🕊️⛪ Over the centuries, Roman foundations, medieval chapels, Gothic details, Baroque altars, and the Romanesque bell tower were all added together, turning the cathedral into a timeline of Split’s history carved in stone. 🏛️⏳ The bell tower rises 57 metres above the old town and offers views across Split and the Adriatic coast. 🔔🌊

I am walking through 𝘋𝘪𝘰𝘬𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘫𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘢č𝘢, but this place no longer feels like just an ancient palace. 🏛️🦙 What Emperor Diocletian once built as a luxurious and heavily fortified retirement residence on the Adriatic coast slowly became the beating heart of Split’s old town. 🌊🏘️ Inside these massive Roman walls, houses, churches, markets, and narrow stone streets appeared over the centuries, creating a city that has been continuously lived in for almost seventeen hundred years. ⛪🛒 Diocletian himself was born near here in the Roman province of Dalmatia around the year 244 and rose from a modest background to become emperor of the Roman Empire. 👑📜 When he came to power in 284, the empire was struggling with wars, invasions, and political chaos, so he reorganized the empire and introduced the rule of four emperors known as the tetrarchy. ⚔️🛡️ He later became the first Roman emperor to voluntarily step down from the throne in 305 and retired here along the Dalmatian coast. 🌅🇭🇷 According to a famous story, he preferred growing cabbages in his garden over returning to politics and imperial power struggles. 🥬🌿 Even some 3,500-year-old Egyptian sphinxes brought here by Diocletian have survived the centuries. 🐪🗿 After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, residents of nearby Salona sought refuge within the palace’s thick walls and that’s how the complex changed into a living city. Today cafés, apartments, and shops still exist between the original Roman structures and around 3,000 people still live within the old palace walls. ☕🏺

From this park I walked straight toward the famous 𝘡𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘯𝘢 𝘝𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘢, the Golden Gate, once the main northern entrance into the city. 🚪🏛️ Roman emperor Diocletian likely entered here himself after leaving the imperial throne in the year 305. 👑📜 Over the centuries the gate was sealed, damaged, and later reopened, but many original Roman details still remain visible today. 🪨⏳ Just across from the gate stands the enormous statue of 𝘎𝘳𝘨𝘶𝘳 𝘕𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘬𝘪. 🗿🇭🇷 Gregory of Nin was a medieval bishop who fought for religious services to be held in Croatian instead of only Latin so ordinary people could understand them. ⛪📖 His statue originally stood inside the palace complex in 1929 before being moved here after World War II. 🚚🏰 Of course I rubbed the shiny golden toe for good luck, just like everyone else passing through Split. ✨🦶

My morning after 𝘚𝘷𝘦𝘵𝘪 𝘋𝘶𝘫𝘦 started quietly as I wandered into 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘑𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘱𝘢 𝘑𝘶𝘳𝘫𝘢 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳𝘢 to get to the old city. 🌳🦙 Tall trees covered the park in shade while locals rested on the old stone benches around me. 🌿🪑 Since 1859 this garden, known as Đardin, has been one of Split’s favourite green corners away from the busy streets. 🌸🏛️ The park is named after Josip Strossmayer, a Croatian bishop and politician who strongly supported education, culture, and the arts in Croatia during the 19th century. 📚🇭🇷 I stopped at the beautiful 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘢 𝘍𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘢, a charming hexagonal fountain with a small putto (an angel-like figure) drinking from a shell at the top. ⛲🐚 Just beyond the trees, I spotted the old Bell Tower and Chapel of the Holy Arnir. 🔔⛪ It is the last remaining part of a medieval monastery that later became a convent before much of it disappeared during World War II. 🏰📜 Walking here so early made Split feel peaceful again after yesterday’s celebrations. 🌅🇭🇷
