BREAKING: Activists unveil Marwan Barghouti statue in Parliament Square Today, activists unveiled a new statue of Marwan Barghouti in Parliament Square, but were then intercepted by police. Marwan Barghouti has been imprisoned by Israel for 24 years, 1 month and 19 days for crimes he did not commit. He was convicted by a court he did not recognise in a trial widely criticised by legal experts and human rights observers. A sitting Palestinian parliamentarian at the time of his arrest, he remains, more than two decades later, the most popular choice for Palestinian leadership in opinion polls. Often called ‘Palestine’s Mandela’, he is a powerful symbol of hope and a long-time advocate for freedom and dignity for the Palestinian people. Nelson Mandela was once politically isolated and labelled a terror*st before being recognised as a global symbol of freedom and justice. Marwan Barghouti faces a similar fate. The statue may not stand in Parliament Square yet, but we know this is a just cause. One day, Marwan will take his rightful place alongside other civil rights leaders. Free Marwan. Tonight, @thv took a turn in the audience as he watched @gracieabrams and dojacat perform at #VogueWorld: Hollywood. No stranger to a fashion show either, the @bts.bighitofficial star dressed in a look that could have easily appeared on the runway.
It is my strong opinion that the freedom to fight for our rights, to continue to speak out against hate must use our most famous American iconology to create real change. When we are divided and at war with each other, peace and unity feel out of our hands. This is why I personally want to reclaim and raise money by using the symbol that includes all of us, the American flag, whatever beliefs we hold. To hate the symbol of the flag right now is completely valid, I’m just sick of it being used against me when it has always meant so much more throughout my life. It was the symbol of the world I was moving to from the UK, it was the symbol of my new life and friends and the kindness of my California peers. It’s a pattern I've played with my whole career in fashion and especially at Wildfox. It would be easier to make pretty dresses and be silent, especially now. But my brand is an extension of me. I need to stand up for what I feel is right, even if it causes me pain. As an artist I am willing to take these risks, I know other brands whose owners have different beliefs than my own, and they stay safe in silence. For me this is my revolt; saying what I want to with my brand. To change who wears the flag and uses it- I am in pursuit of love and unity. It sparks conversation, triggers anger, and puts me directly at the center of heat, that is the point. The thing about choices is that I have them, these collections are my American story.
