I was so convinced I was going past my due date that when contractions began two days before, I gaslit myself into thinking they weren’t real contractions and went about my morning (I thought I was just constipated lol). I organized my closet with my mom, we gave Koda a shower, we even had cleaners scheduled to clean the house at noon.
By the time the cleaners arrived, I was on all fours on the sofa. We started timing contractions, and they were averaging 2.5 minutes apart but varying in length. When I texted my birth team “hey not sure if this is real but here’s a screenshot of my contraction timer data” and they said “we’re on our way” - that’s when I realized we were having our baby. Now I know that I was already in active labor.
The beginning of my labor wasn’t as tranquil as I had planned for - instead of soft music and aromatherapy it was the sound of cleaners vacuuming and chit chatting away. Meanwhile I was entering another dimension entirely, where anything could have been happening around me and I wouldn’t have noticed.
By the time my doctor @phabulouscare arrived at 3pm I was 6cm dilated, 100% effaced and at a station -1 (she didn’t tell me any of this in real time though, which I am grateful for). Meanwhile, Zack and I were in our “breath bubble” - for the next 5 hours he counted me through each exhale as I leaned my entire weight on him. All the birth prep we did with our doula @thesoulfulbirth allowed me to use my breath to soften my body through the intensity rather than resist it. For the rest of the afternoon we moved around from the bed to the toilet to the tub, locked in our breath bubble, inhaling deep and exhaling slow through a pressure so powerful and intense that it is hard to put into words, or even fully remember now. I was almost silent over the course of my labor, because I felt like any outward noise was a waste of energy (until I was pushing, then I went full primal) but in my head I repeated a few affirmations again and again: “this power is not bigger than me, it is me” “every wave brings me closer to meeting her” and when it got the most intense, “the only way out is through”.
