Many women who think they can't tolerate progesterone are actually reacting to synthetic progestogens. This week on my @drlouisenewsonpodcast, biochemist Dr Phyllis Bronson joined me to talk about progesterone, a hormone that has often been forgotten for far too long. Phyllis's doctoral research looked at the molecular differences between bioidentical progesterone and the synthetic progestogens found in many contraceptive pills and older types of HRT, and she explains why even a small change to a molecule can have such a big effect on the body. We talk about progesterone as the 'molecule of calm', how it works differently when it's used through the skin or taken orally, and why it's often the first hormone to decline, sometimes as early as our 20s and 30s. I see women in my clinic whose lives have been transformed when they're given the right type of progesterone at the right dose for them, because progesterone has such important effects on the brain as well as the womb.
