This 2014 political cartoon highlights growing concerns in the United States over homelessness, suicide, and untreated post-traumatic stress disorder among military veterans returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

By the early 2010s, reports from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs revealed that thousands of veterans were experiencing homelessness each night, while rising awareness of veteran suicide sparked national discussions and efforts to improve mental health care.

PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, substance abuse, and the challenges of adjusting to civilian life were increasingly recognized as lasting consequences of military service following September 11, 2001.

The cartoon also references the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, a memorial established in 1921 to honor unidentified American service members who died in war. The imagery draws attention to the contrast between honoring fallen soldiers and caring for veterans who return home.

6 month update —
Well we’re about a week shy of 6 months, but still all the same right? Since my work visa was rejected, my life has definitely shifted on its axis. There have definitely been moments of gratitude for the experiences I’ve been allowed to have with many members of my family. Many of which I don’t think I would have ever truly gotten to know as individual humans, were this not my situation. But as grateful as I am, I am still overcome with waves of pain and grief. Losing my entire life so abruptly was never something I could have prepared for. Nor is it something that is easy to navigate. Honestly a rather traumatic experience that I doubt I’ll ever find the words to explain. I feel lost most of the time. Sometimes empty. But I’ve found a window of hope by staying in motion. Either by going on runs to move my body or exploring more of my home country weeks at a time with different family. As long as I keep moving and keep my mind occupied, I can find the will to stay positive. And as a realist, it’s very hard for me to hold on to the bright side of things. How’s that saying go? Depression can’t hit a moving target…anyway here’s some photos exploring movement & emotion
