Albert Pujols vs Brad Lidge
October 17, 2005. NLCS Game 5. Two outs. Ninth inning. Season on the line.
Brad Lidge made his pitch. Albert Pujols didn’t miss.
The ball didn’t just clear the wall, it disappeared into the night, one of the longest and most violent home runs ever hit in October. Minute Maid Park went silent. The Cardinals stayed alive.
It’s remembered as more than a home run because of what followed. Lidge had been nearly untouchable. After that swing, he wasn’t the same that postseason. The image lingered, the moment stayed with him.
For Pujols, it was pure dominance under pressure. For Lidge, it became a defining moment of how one swing can echo far beyond a single game.

Great night, but the next night Roy Oswalt shut down St. Louis. Never thought Houston would come back from this HR, but they did.

Pujols broke Lidge that night. I’ve never seen the air sucked out of a stadium faster. The best reaction was Petit on Houston’s bench…his jaw dropped and he mouthed “oh my god”

Didn’t Lidge win a World Series in Philadelphia 3 years after this?

Remember this very well. The Cardinals have had some big time dramatic home runs in their history but this one was special
