A few thoughts from a solo trip, and why I love them. Have you ever travelled alone? You learn to treat your own company as something valuable. Not just the time in between seeing other people. Not something to fill. You make plans for yourself, take yourself somewhere beautiful, order the nice food, wander around - because your own experience is worth making good too. You find out what YOU actually want to do. No compromising. No keeping someone else entertained. I don’t plan much when I’m alone - and when I do, it’s because I genuinely want to do something, not because I feel like I should be making the most of the trip. You start appreciating really ordinary things again. A coffee. An ice cream. Walking somewhere with nowhere to be. I somehow become much more grateful when I travel alone - something I’m not always very good at in the everyday hassle. You can move however, whenever… or not at all. Train. Walk for hours. Swim. Lie around doing absolutely nothing. Nobody else’s schedule, nobody waiting for you. I love that. Sometimes you finally feel the things you’ve been too busy to feel. You can cry swimming at sunset because you’re finally allowing yourself to grieve. Or because life is beautiful. Or somehow both at once. Sometimes things only catch up with you when everything gets quiet. And you HAVE to be able to laugh at yourself. 🤣 When your planning goes completely wrong, there’s nobody else to blame. Your bad decisions are entirely your own. Turns out that’s quite freeing too.
