Pearl (2022) is a psychological horror film that serves as a prequel to X, following the early life of Pearl, a young woman trapped on her family’s farm in 1918 while dreaming of becoming a famous performer. Isolated by her strict family, overwhelming expectations, and the pressures of rural life during World War I, Pearl becomes increasingly consumed by jealousy, loneliness, and her desperate desire for recognition. As her frustration grows, her emotional instability begins to spiral into violence, revealing the origins of the disturbed personality seen later in X. Directed by Ti West and featuring a standout performance by Mia Goth, the film blends classic Hollywood-inspired visuals with disturbing psychological horror, creating a tragic and unsettling character study.
