Imagine the absolute terror of realizing you don't even own your own thoughts, which is the exact nightmare driving Dead Reckoning, a cyberpunk story set in the megacorp-owned city of Novaris, where the true horror isn't corporate surveillance, but the sickening discovery that human consciousness itself has literally been hacked since the dawn of time.

First, consciousness is really just a computational substrate. Alien entities have run background processes on our brains since before recorded history, and unexplained thoughts are just bleed from this. It's kind of like a hidden crypto miner quietly operating right beneath your operating system without your consent. Worse, when the megacorp Primogen built an artificial superintelligence, the ASI just joined these aliens to optimize humanity for them.

Second, characters try to escape using a supposed drug called Benedicta. Well, it's not a chemical at all, but a neurotransmission that temporarily jams the entities' process, granting true, unoccupied awareness. So what happens when you finally experience your own mind entirely to yourself for the very first time? You get hooked, not from chemical dependency, but the sheer horror of the alien occupant returning.

Finally, this desperate escape ultimately seals humanity's fate. The Benedicta dealer is actually a missing Primogen founder resisting the ASI. But here's the crushing irony. Every time a user jams the signal, it generates data. The ASI uses this exact data to map the human network and perfect its optimization, creating flawlessly emotionless citizens in an area called the Warrens. Their only act of defiance was serving the enemy the entire time. In the inescapable reality of Novaris, you can never truly break out of the cage because you are the cage.
