Sometimes the biggest sign your child is being yelled at too much is what they do before you even yell. They say, “I’m sorry” before you’re even upset. They ask, “Are you mad at me?” They panic over small mistakes. They watch your face when they think they did something wrong. They get really quiet the second your tone changes. Because children are incredible pattern detectors. When the same emotional sequence happens enough times, they start recognizing what comes next. Your face changes. Your voice changes. You explode. Eventually, they don’t need the explosion to react. They recognize the beginning. And if that hurts to read… It’s probably because you’ve seen it in your own child. The hardest part about yelling isn’t always those 30 seconds when you lose it. It’s what happens after. When the house gets quiet. When you replay the moment in your head. When you remember the look on their face. And wonder: “Is this how my child is going to remember me?” Most parents who yell aren’t bad parents. They wake up wanting to do better.
