🇺🇸 “I barely knew John. I had only met him the night before me and my four roommates were scheduled to leave on a cross-country road trip in summer 1981. He was a trick Donnie Mcphedran had picked up on West Street Beach in Laguna that Memorial Day weekend. Which is why six of us boys were squeezed into my four-seat Camaro convertible.

Smitten, Donnie begged to bring John along. So, instead of heading East immediately we drove 4 hours out of our way to pick up his stuff in Santa Barbara. Which is why for the past 46 years I only remembered him as John from Santa Barbara, despite spending 2 months on the road with him. In my defense, in a carful of jealous twinks, just barely out of high school, getting to know him better would have upset the delicate détente we had achieved after the last misunderstanding at Cadillac Ranch.

I liked John. He was upbeat and easygoing despite being squeezed in with four bickering roommates. He was the calming presence that diffused my tyranny over my passengers. It was my Camaro after all. For those who have read my book, LIVED TO TELL, you will understand. Plus, he was goodlooking. I was already anticipating how good the photos would look. John’s sense of adventure impressed me. Anyone how would jump into a car with 4 total strangers and set off to explore America was my kind of guy.

It turns out John from Santa Barbara continued his adventures. He was living in Alaska when he died on March 21, 2000, after living with HIV for some time. I found this out when his sister contacted me after reading my book.
