Artchives from college
From pottery to weaving
My professor taught both at our Birdseye campus in the upper Peninsula of Michigan on Lake Superior
I still remember when the weaving students came into our pottery class to show our professor their weaving projects
I didn't realize that weaving existed
I was in awe and in love
I changed my minor to art and explored the warp and the weft, on and off the loom, and colors, and textured yarns, and patterns
I was obsessed with interior design and earthy fashion at that time so my creations were mostly functional
I discovered the gothic cross (with mercerized cotton) and made pillows after a summer exploring Italy - yum
One of my most crazy discoveries was playing with bright red and electric blue yarns - a wickedly fun combo that mesmerized my eyes as I rhythmicallly shuttled and pressed my creation to life
We even made our own yarn from sheep's poopy wool, my hands were both stinky and ever so soft from the lanolin
We also made Native American coiled baskets with patterns and colors
And then, we could visit with all the other artists doing metalsmithing, jewelry making, wood working, papermaking
It was an oasis of hand made explorations nestled in rolling mounts to hike, rocks to climb, a never ending lake to dip in, snow to sled on, ice crystsls to sparkle up the trees in moonlight, meteor showers to dazzle, shooting stars to wish on, northern lights to blow my mind, and loves to grow with forever
