Having grown up in strict & highly religious environments, I notice similarities between classical music study and religion. The reverence, hierarchy, and rules around behavior and belonging… perhaps it provides some level of structure that feels safe to some of us.🤔

Additionally, I cannot ignore ways that classical music study can perpetuate exclusivity and elitism. It has historically centered around whiteness and STILL struggles to branch out. I’ve made some other videos about how I think this can be addressed, but simply telling people to “play music by other composers” is not doing much. This is work that must be done from the inside out.

That said, I don’t believe high standards and discipline are the problem either. I do believe that excellence can be pursued and achieved without losing humanity, joy, and ease. 😌

Just my thoughts & observations.

Classically trained dancer here - so glad my school was balancing classical culture with Graham techniqur and self-discovery back in the 90s...

Wasn't it Beethoven that said that it is insignificant to play a wrong note, but inexcusable to play without passion?

Classical music is so pretentious, pompous and classist, designed as a game of status, competition and superiority. Honestly the whole culture is so toxic that I actively avoid going to prestigious venues to listen to the music unless it’s involved my musician friends, or colleagues. The genre has unfortunately devolved into a narcissistic defensive museum-like athletic anti-art anti-human hierarchical classism-focused garbage that serves the high image of the states and elites rather functions as a form of art, human expressions, an outlet of creativity and personal empowerment.

So. I grew up as an evangelical homeschooled kid in Texas who for my entire life wanted to be an opera singer. High control environment for sure. Cult? I’d say so. And then I got into a conservatory. And as someone over a decade out from religious deconstruction and over half a decade out from gradation…yeah. Absolutely. I could talk about this all day. The easiest way out of a cult is to join another one. I was committed because I believed in the higher purpose behind the goal I worked towards. I am permanently scarred by the consequences of that commitment. I will always deeply love the art. And because I can’t leave that behind, I have to fight the culture while it’s actively hurting people. And if that doesn’t exactly mirror my spiritual journey that’s because it’s not a reflection, it’s the same damn thing.

Just confine yourself to performing repertoire within your technical and emotional ability and everything will be fine. What's so hard about that?

Ok on it as a religion, i feel like this definitely came to light when timothee chalamet criticised opera; like his criticism did NOT warrant the outcry that came afterward. I found it showed a lot of companies not reflecting on their accessibility or relevance to audiences but instead turning to their ingroup (those that don't criticize capital C classical music in that way) to reaffirm authority. And idk if it was rlly gr8
