Do you want to inspect your trees before you buy them to make sure you have healthy root flare with no circling roots. When you get the tree home, it needs to be 6 to 8 feet away from any previous tree stumps. You want to take the tree out of the container or pull back the burlap and remove the top few inches of soil until you are at the height of the root flare. Then you want to remove any roots that are growing in a circle at the bottom of the container and rough up the sides of the root ball. Rough up the sides of the hole. You can water the hole at this point. Get the plant in and make sure that the root flare is at the height of the ground or slightly higher maybe an inch. You just don’t want it low and you don’t want it really high. Backfill with the exact same soil, you took out of the hole. Water deeply step on the soil Ilya back filled to eliminate air pockets and put a 2 to 3 inch layer of shredded hardwood mulch all around. A wide mulching to keep mowers away is a great idea if you are planting a tree that is surrounded by turf grass. if you have really poor compacted soil, you could widen the hole at the top according to several arborists.
